In the event of a medical emergency CALL 911!
Not Breathing
For a teen or adult who is unresponsive and not breathing normally or is only gasping:
- Call 911 immediately. Put the phone on speaker and follow the dispatcher’s instructions.
- Place the person on their back on a firm, flat surface.
- Begin chest compressions immediately. Do not pause to check for a pulse or give rescue breaths.
- Place the heel of one hand in the center of the chest. Place your other hand on top and interlock your fingers.
- Keep your arms straight with your shoulders directly above your hands.
- Push hard and fast, compressing the chest about 2 inches at a rate of 100–120 compressions per minute.
- Allow the chest to return to its normal position after each compression.
- Continue compressions with as few interruptions as possible.
- If an AED is available, have someone retrieve it. Turn it on, follow its instructions and resume compressions immediately when directed.
- Continue compressions until EMS arrives and takes over. Stop sooner only if the person begins breathing normally, the scene becomes unsafe or you are physically unable to continue.
- Remain calm and continue following the 911 dispatcher’s instructions.
- If someone else is present, ask them to gather the person’s medications and doctor’s contact information. Do not stop compressions to do this.
